[西餐] Hot water

message
If you are a customer, you ask for hot water with lemon and sugar, do you expect to pay?
I charged the customer $1 for a tea pot of hot water, cup, spoon, sugar, and 2 slice of lemon.
The customer got angry when she saw it on the bill, and refuse to pay.

I mean, we all love to have everything for free as customer.  Would you pay if you were charged?

In most "western" restaurant I have been to, I was not charged with hot water (that comes with lemon too).
Only place I got charged is C restaurant. But they give out lemon juice in a squeeze container like the "eye drop". So they charge $ as it's more "fancy" than giving out lemon wedges?
As long as the charge is not too high, I am willing to pay. I think C charges me $2 or $2.5.
But think about it, they can charge $3 for tea, which is just hot water + tea bag (how much is a tea bag?) So I dn't mind if I got charged a little bit la. Of course, free is the best la.

For Chinese restaurant...of course not expect the charge la...since it's always provided free HOT TEA (or included in the "tea charge already), why would i expect extra charges for hot water?

What "type" of the restaurant you work for? I mean, Hongkongese-western style, Caucasian style, or Chinese....etc?

If you gave it to the customer in a glass, then (as a customer myself), I most certainly wouldn't expect to be charged law. Tons of places add a slide or wedge of lemon into their ice water ga la. And sugar is always a complimentary item mah.

You could argue that since you brought it out in a tea pot, that might be different. But I can totally see how the customer would get upset law.

(And really, I wouldn't expect to it to come out in a tea pot, and I wouldn't expect to get charged la.)

Anyways, let the customers know in advance whenever there is a charge on anything they seem don't know or not officially on the menu.

通常去西餐問拿熱水加檸檬,佢地唔會CHARGE我。。。因為你去西餐廳食野,佢都會比ICED WATER WITH LEMON BY DEFAULT。。。

Yeah like sometimes I got charged if I want "honey with lemon" as drink from the set menu. At first I am not too 'happy' because it's free else where.
So it's always nice if there is extra charge just let the customer know, especially when customer requests something "not on the menu".

Same as I ask for XO sauce at dim sum restaurants. I ask: "Do you have XO sauce please?" If the server answers: "Yes, we do.", and then he/she gives me one, I won't expect to pay for it cuz he/she didn't mention. But if he/she answers: "Oh yes, it's $3 per dish.", then it's my decision to order it or not and of course I understand that I have to pay for it.

If a customer goes to a HKese-western restaurant and order a cup/glass of hot water, I believe nobody would charge for it. But then the cheap customer ask for some slices of lemon and put together with the free sugar which was already on the table setting to make a self-made "hot lemon water", I think he/she will be charged! (the fact is, no server will give him/her free lemon in the first place)
