According to CTV:
Under the criminal code, a conviction on that charge carries a possible jail sentence of six months, Drever said. "That very, very rarely happens, unfortunately."

She said that the SPCA is hopeful that Buddy's owners will be given a lifetime prohibition against caring for animals.

It's absolutely heart breaking, how could someone be so crude. Jail time and heavy penalties must be imposed to deter cases like this to happen again in the future! I mean, the couple who allowed this to happen should be treated the same way and see how they feel: lock them up in a small room and let them swim in their feces without food and water!

I was watching the CTV news last night, and you can see how sweet a dog Tropper is.  He would follow the leash and his eyes were always looking at the handeler, just little traits suggesting a good dog.  I really don't understand!

on a side note, china is only 'considering' banning dog and cat meat....

What China is doing is simply lip service. I bet even when the "law" is passed, lots of people will continue to do it "underground."  It's culture and education that people needed to really understand and appreciate life.  Just look at the tainted baby formula, where does a pet stand if human lives weren't respected?

true. but china or anyone in a culture that eat dog or cat may look at it differently.  they see dog or cat are just like cows or pigs or chickens... why eating dog is a problem when eating cows is not?  we can also keep cows as pets...  I guess it's a sad storey, but it's not necessary a right or wrong issue.
