Even for us who have no problem communicating in English, at time, we panic, and don't know what to do, epecially when traveling alone. Yes, some of us here are smart, and talented, and have plenty of experience, etc..!
Let's face it, she is traveling alone for the 1st time to Canada..! She is probably not very smart...., but we do live in a world where not everyone have IQ over 80, right?
Chance was, the custom people are very mean.. and she was panic.., and says things where the custom claim was her final answer.. or whatever...!
The last 2 times I was back to HK, I can honestly say that I have very good experience with them.
I have met so many people in the past, where you just know they have communication prolbem with their first language, and you would need to repeat the questions 2-3 times before one would understand the question...!

ppl who has communication problem (I mean real problem like below average IQ or little kids) should have special arrangement with the airline or someone should travel with them.
It's basically unsafe.
For that woman from Taiwan, I am not sure if I read that her sister is expecting her outside the airport... or now her cousin. so who really is expecting her? And if you are picking up someone who doesn't speak the language, it's better to keep her cell phone on and check with immigration if the waiting time is way too long.
HK immigration is nice to some ppl. try to be a south asian or one from other "high protential country" who look like will illegally extend their stay in HK. They may not be as nice.
I agree with B仔........... for Grannies that don't speak English, they can wear a tag or label on their chest that say "I don't speak English". Flight Attendants and other airport staffs would take care of them like V.I.P.
Like I said in another thread and B仔's example as well............. if you are waiting for someone in the airport for hours, you would go to custom and check what's going on. If you are very close to that person, you would 擔保 her, just like what my friend did for her friend!
Furthermore, all customs in the world are impolite. That's not something new. If you go to some corrupted countries like Indonesia, you need to put money in your passport when you pass immigration!
態度衰, all the customs are like that, the HK officers are not good to china mainlander or s e asian either.
she may be panic, but those are really simple questions that shouldn't be confused. cousin, friend of friend or sister are totally different ar. there was a translator, so shouldn't be any communication problem at the end.
i like to ask my friend to bring back stuffs for me, but not the one who can't speak much english, because just want that person avoid from trouble.
she tried to use the media, but forgot when we dug deeper, we would find her faults too.
