Cloudy water on horizon - Richmond Review

By Martin van den Hemel - Richmond Review - January 30, 2008

A water main that supplies Richmond has been shut down by Metro Vancouver as seismic upgrading work is being done near the Oak Street bridge, and that means locals may notice their tap water has become cloudy.

According to the city, a possible increase in turbidity does not pose an immediate health risk and the water remains safe to drink for most healthy people.

However, those with suppressed immune systems related to medical conditions should take extra precautions such as boiling their water or using bottled water.

The city doesn't anticipate any major change to water pressure levels as this work is being done when water demand is at its lowest level of the year.

Water testing has been stepped up since the work began on Friday, and so far lab results have come back showing everything is fine.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of February.

Residents with concerns should contact the city's public works dispatcher at 604-270-8721.
