When you want to survive in a society that speaks Cantonese, even your mandarine is good you have to learn Cantonese in order to survive.
Same to us that we try to speak good Mandarine here in order to entertain our Mainland brothers....

You actually got the critical point – if Cantonese is vital for children to the survival and success in society, Cantonese will be an important skill that school should teach and will teach.
Young people in Taiwan are losing their 閩南話, will you say the Taiwanese government purposely tries to eliminate 閩南話?
A few of my friends who are CBC can actually speak fluent Cantonese. Couple of them are fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin and they can also read and write in Chinese. How can they achieve that? It is because they and their parents believe those language skills are important for their future success. |
