the custom is very polite already, he can get lock up and reject from the states forever with this kind of attitude. if they ask you question, you answer, and dont make fun of it!!
i think this guy doesn't understand that he s entering into ANOTHER COUNTRY!! no matter how close our geographical locations are, we are DIFFERENT countries.
the custom just doing their job, defending the front line of their country IMHO
He is a little overreacted, may be that is why he was asked to go in for interviewing. The attitude of this guy make the customs become suspicious, and he frequently said something which try challenge them.
Customs have their job to do, and sometime they may be a little bit being like a jerk but hey, if that's the price we pay for safety, I would love to do so.
There is no big reason for going to the US to shop. We can just stay in Canada where the people are friendlier. I would rather go to Hong Kong or China where the sales people are way friendlier. These Americans need to know that it is the US that made enemies out of the other countries, that is why we have all these securities.
the guy has attitude problem, but which stores? how do i know if i never been there before

So you need to get prepared before you go. Like which mall, which stores you are going, and buy what. They can even ask why you are going, since you can buy everything here in Canada. They can ask why you go there to buy milk, eggs and ice cream. You can say it is cheaper there. But what if they say you can't really save much money?
