Port Coquitlam vote on salary boost gets province’s attention
By KELLY SINOSKI, Vancouver Sun
JULY 25, 2010

METRO VANCOUVER - As Port Coquitlam’s mayor and council vote Monday on giving themselves a hefty pay raise, the minister in charge of B.C. municipalities is reviewing whether the proposed increase is justified.

Community and Rural Development Minister Ben Stewart said he was surprised to hear that Port Coquitlam was considering a 27-per-cent raise for Mayor Greg Moore and a 42-per-cent boost for each councillor.

The proposed increase, which follows a recent 17-per-cent pay hike for Burnaby’s mayor and 1.6-per-cent hike for councillors, is aimed at bringing Port Coquitlam salaries closer to those of neighbouring councils.

If approved, Moore’s salary would jump to $85,418 from $67,277, while the councillors’ pay would increase to $31,654 from $22,257. Port Coquitlam council has not had a pay increase for 15 years.

“Certainly it’s challenging times and I find it difficult for taxpayers to accept what I’m seeing in percentages although it may be relative to what other councils are being paid,” Stewart said. “I’m doing my own personal review to see whether they’re in line.”

councilor is a part time job.
most councilors make around that figure or less

But that guy's current salary of $67,277 is definitely not much.

Completely agree.

Can't really fault the mayor for trying to get a pay raise here, but I would say the move lacks political wisdom as the pay raise percentage is just over the top in today's political and (more importantly) economic climate. IMO, it would be smarter to propose a gradual but continual salary increase over a larger number of years (say, 5 to 7? perhaps even longer?) to bring the salary back in line.

Agree. It is too low. Some people around me make much more than this figure.

In India, many villages are way more populous than so-called cities in Canada.
A small place with small population, like Port Coquitlam should be called a village.

Richmond only became a city in 1990. There used to be a sign saying "Welcome to the Township of Richmond", just off the Oak Street bridge.
