VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Some British Columbians will be getting a tax break starting next year.
That is the promise from Premier Gordon Campbell, who delivered his televised address tonight.
People with an income of up to $72,000 a year will see a 15 per cent income tax reduction starting January 1 of 2011, which makes it the second largest personal income tax relief measure in BC's history, according to Premier's office. The tax cut will still need legislative approval, however.
Campbell's approval ratings hit rock bottom after the introduction of unpopular Harmonized Sales Tax this summer. The Premier kicked off his speech saying the downturn in the economy forced his government to go with the HST. Campbell said the tax makes B.C. more competitive, helping people keep their jobs and creating new ones. He says the decision over HST was made quickly, and there is a lot more his government could have done to explain the tax to British Columbians better.
NDP Leader Carol James says she likes to know why Campbell's government didn't acknowledge that it had the money to give out tax breaks before.
James says the Premier still hasn't apologized for "blindsiding" people with the HST. "He still didn't tell the public that he was sorry. The premier [was] trying to actually buy public support with a tax cut. I'm a big believer in a competitive tax environment, but quite frankly this is a ridiculous way to set tax policy."
Fight HST Organizer Chris Delaney says Campbell is a Premier who's "making it up as he goes along."
"I don't even know how anybody can function or operate around that. But, we need to get the referendum done sooner, so we can get this issue over with. He should have reconvened the legislature and just had a free vote there. This whole thing is a total waste, and it's a total exercise in trying to support and prop up his Premiership." |
