VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Some British Columbians will be getting a tax break starting next year.

That is the promise from Premier Gordon Campbell, who delivered his televised address tonight.

People with an income of up to $72,000 a year will see a 15 per cent income tax reduction starting January 1 of 2011, which makes it the second largest personal income tax relief measure in BC's history, according to Premier's office. The tax cut will still need legislative approval, however.

Campbell's approval ratings hit rock bottom after the introduction of unpopular Harmonized Sales Tax this summer. The Premier kicked off his speech saying the downturn in the economy forced his government to go with the HST. Campbell said the tax makes B.C. more competitive, helping people keep their jobs and creating new ones. He says the decision over HST was made quickly, and there is a lot more his government could have done to explain the tax to British Columbians better.

NDP Leader Carol James says she likes to know why Campbell's government didn't acknowledge that it had the money to give out tax breaks before.

James says the Premier still hasn't apologized for "blindsiding" people with the HST. "He still didn't tell the public that he was sorry. The premier [was] trying to actually buy public support with a tax cut. I'm a big believer in a competitive tax environment, but quite frankly this is a ridiculous way to set tax policy."

Fight HST Organizer Chris Delaney says Campbell is a Premier who's "making it up as he goes along."

"I don't even know how anybody can function or operate around that. But, we need to get the referendum done sooner, so we can get this issue over with. He should have reconvened the legislature and just had a free vote there. This whole thing is a total waste, and it's a total exercise in trying to support and prop up his Premiership."

Less Income tax, more Sales tax (HST), I can't see why any of these is a bad thing.

Yes, he is a big liar on the HST ordeal, but overall can't help but say it's still light years better than NDP so far. The Libs still have a huge margin before I'll choose NDP instead. Hail income tax cut!

With his political career clearly in the toilets, does Gordo really think British Columbians will forgive him and the Liberals over the HST fiasco? Even when he tries to buy their loyalty back by lowering personal income tax, I honestly don't think that'll be enough. As a matter of fact, people will just view the measure as exactly what it is -- a blatant measure for Gordo to try buying the voters' loyalty back, and voters will just take the cash and still vote the Liberals out without even thanking them.

Barring major oopsies like what NDP did with the Ferries, I'll still vote Lib.

People are so focused on the HST ordeal. Yes Campbell/Libs lied on the HST ordeal, but then it's a small thing in comparison to the long term economic health of the province, which the Libs have been provably proficient in handling. Voting out a liar at the cost of the provincial economy, I don't see how that is good for voters and taxpayers in the long run.

People need to take a deep breathe, use their EQ a lil, take out a white board, put down the Pros and Cons of voting out the Liberals, and then think twice before we get ourselves another 10 years of terror from the NDP.

a real 15% on $75000 is a big deal.

even if it's just 15% on the portion between whatever tax bracket below ($39000 or something)? to $75,000 is a huge savings

if u really get that, even a 25% HST is cheap

but of course, those who don't make much don't get the tax benefits...haha

I agree with you on this.  I will still vote for Lib simply b/c NDP is worse.

And I can never understand why people are so emotional about this HST decision.  If I were him, I would have done the same if I know that I can get a big chunk of money from the fed.  Isn't this a good economical decision and good for the people in BC?  O well, i guess if people here are not emotional, we wouldn't see this number of BMW running on the street

"People with an income of up to $72,000 a year"

Hmm.... Does it mean 15% reduction only for people under 72 grands?  Nth for people over 72k?
