Disgraced cancer crusader Steve Fonyo awaits sentencing on more charges

Cross-Canada cancer runner Steve Fonyo has pleaded guilty to a slew of criminal charges.

Fonyo, who is in custody, entered the pleas in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey.

Fonyo admitted to fraud, uttering threats, unauthorized use of credit- card data, possession of stolen property under $5,000, multiple counts of driving while prohibited and breach of release conditions.

The charges are related to incidents that took place between June 23, 2009, and Nov. 7, 2010.

The most recent charge relates to threatening his wife, whom he married in August at the beach in Victoria that bears his name.

Fonyo, who has an artificial leg, ran coast to coast in 1985, raising $13 million for cancer research.

The cross-country trek earned Fonyo the Order of Canada in 1987, but he struggled in later years with drug and alcohol abuse. After a string of assault, theft and other charges, Fonyo was stripped of the honour in January this year.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January.

Steve Fonyo lost his leg to cancer when he was 12, when he was 18 he began his "Journey for Lives" a cross country run to raise funds for cancer research, he completed that run and raised millions, he received the Order of Canada, and was later stripped of the Order because of his criminal record. Steve now lives in Surrey BC with his girlfriend and two cats, he makes a living as a truck mechanic
