The Conference Board of Canada credits "a mini-boom in the Canadian housing market, a slight improvement in American demand, and growing exports to China."
The think-tank says Canada overtook Russia this year to become the biggest supplier of softwood lumber to China. It predicts the industry's total profit will be $476 million this year and it says the improvement will mean the return of another 9,700 jobs next year. The industry is dominated by British Columbia.
The report warns a drop in the Canadian housing market next year could affect lumber demand.
