Dally with Dali
The Dali Museum (www.thedali.org, $21 US) in St. Petersburg, Fla. (www.VisitStPeteClearwater.com) houses the world’s largest collection of the surrealist’s work. New premises open on Jan. 11 with 50-per-cent more space allotted for the 2,100 pieces of the permanent Salvador Dali collection.
Sledding adventure
Fernie Dog Sledding (www.ferniedogsledding.com, from $115) offers tours of the Elk Valley for a one-hour (or longer) introduction to mushing. All tours include the option of driving your own sled plus transfers from Fernie Alpine Resort or Fernie, hot chocolate and trail snacks.
Warm and affordable
You wouldn’t know it by this week’s snow, but Myrtle Beach, S.C., is going to be warm by March. You can play on a strip of white sand beach and stay in a studio at the Wyndham Towers on the Grove (1-800-428-1932, www.extraholidays.com), an all-condo beachfront resort, from $69 US per night until March 31.
Snowshoeing
Vancouver Island’s Mount Washington Alpine Resort (1-250-338-1386, www.mountwashington.ca, $52.50) offers Snowshoe Tour and Fondue dinners on Fridays and Saturdays. Snowshoe through old growth forest followed by a three-course fondue at Raven Lodge. Reservations required.
Look up
Next time you are in Flagstaff, Ariz., rather than going to the Grand Canyon, go about 70 kilometres east on Interstate 40 instead. For $15 US you can see a much smaller hole that tells you something much larger than the Canyon is gaining on all of us. Hint: www.meteorcrater.com
Galapagos
Austin-Lehman Adventures (www.austinlehman.com) has two different weeklong options for exploring the Galápagos Islands. Stay at three intimate lodges ($3,016 US) and motor by high-speed boat among the three islands or board a 20-passenger luxury motor yacht, stopping at islands by day ($3,375 US). Airfare is extra.
Wintry slide show
The ARC’TERYX Deep Winter Photo Challenge (www.deepwinterphoto.com) on Jan. 15 will feature slide shows from six of the industry’s best ski and snowboard photographers. Photos were taken over three days at Whistler Blackcomb. Tickets $17.
