Voter apathy for new Smart Card? anywhere, starting, popular, proving, medium

A vote to pick one of three finalists for the name of TransLink’s new Smart Card fare medium isn’t proving anywhere near as popular as the contest to pick the name.

There were more than 56,000 entries to name the new card, which users can use to pay for transit starting in 2013.

But after a week, just 4,559 votes have been cast to select the winner out of the three finalists — Starfish, Compass and TPass.

The divergent responses might be attributed to the fact the person who selected the winning name gets an iPad and a year’s worth of transit. There are no prizes for voting for the best name.

In order not to skew voting, TransLink is not revealing which name is leading.

Voting closes January 28 and can be done on the TransLink website, TransLink's Facebook page or by mail.
