Vancouver’s own Godfrey Gao has become the first Asian model for Louis Vuitton, a contract that has earned him the title of “world’s first Asian supermodel” from some observers.
Gao, 26, was born in Vancouver and attended Argyle secondary school in North Vancouver and Capilano College before moving to Tawain, where he became famous starring in popular TV shows and movies. The Guardian newspaper said that for Gao, the Vuitton campaign will be “a fast-track towards becoming an international household face,” and made note of his “strong jawline” and “manly forearm.”
Gao, who was raised by a Taiwanese father and Malaysian mother, now divides his time between Tapei and Vancouver, where, according to a Facebook page devoted to the 6-foot-4 model, he has worked in fashion shows for Mantique, Torino and Ecko.
The site also says his interests include basketball, American football, volleyball, baseball, ice skating, track and field and Tae Kwon Do.
A photo from the designer’s upcoming 2011 spring/summer collection features Gao with stubble and a brooding look, clutching a Louis Vuitton bag.
