Boy, 12, dead, two in critical, truck driver 'devastated' after Langley crash

12-year-old boy is dead and two young people are in critical condition after a garbage truck smashed into a Ford at a Langley intersection Friday morning.
The 18-year-old female driver, who is the deceased boy's cousin, and another 12-year-old boy who was riding in the back of the Ford were extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital by air ambulance, said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.
The garbage truck was northbound on 256th Street around 11:40 a.m. when the Ford entered its path heading eastbound on Robertson Crescent, according to Marks. The garbage truck had the right of way, as there is a stop sign for east-west traffic at the intersection.
"Whether the stop sign was jumped or whether she didn't stop at all, we don't know," said Marks.
The driver of the garbage truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"Obviously he is just devastated," said Marks. "There's nothing happy about this."
Speed and alcohol are not thought to have been factors in the crash.
Marks said the name of the deceased boy will not be released until at least Saturday morning, as one of his parents has still not been notified.
Investigators, meanwhile, are performing mechanical inspections on the car and truck and will be downloading the contents of the vehicles' on-board computers to try to piece together exactly what happened.
