Many happy returns, warnings signs when filing taxes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - With tax season upon us many people are in a rush to unload their paperwork on somebody else.  But there's nothing worse than putting all your important financial paperwork in the hands of a crook.

There are a couple of red flags you should look out for.  If your tax preparer promises a bigger refund than the competition, be skeptical.

Make sure whoever you do decide to go with is able to be reached all year around, should the Canada Revenue Agency come knocking.

Kevin Hollett with the Better Business Bureau says it's all about credentials.  He adds that people should be wary of scams once they're done filing.

"There's a really common phishing scam out there that purports to be from the Canada Revenue Agency sending you an email saying, 'You've qualified for money from their tax return.'  It gets you to click on a link and input your information into a website.  It's actually a bogus website and you're really setting yourself up for identity theft."

He adds, "The key is to not give in to that impulse.  If you do see someone that has set up in the mall... don't sign up right away until you know exactly who you're dealing with."

Hollett recommends everyone do their homework and research before choosing a tax preparer.  He suggests choosing a certified accountant, tax attorney, a service like H & R Block or using a safe and reputable website.

The BBB also suggests avoiding tax preparers who base their fee on a percentage of your return, it could cost you more to get your money back.
