METRO VANCOUVER — A ranch employee who caught two thieves stealing tools from a workshop may be facing a firearms charge after he shot one of the thieves as he tried to flee early this morning.

The 46-year-old employee, who was questioned by police and released from custody, may be charged with an offence related to discharging a shotgun.

The alleged thief was taken to hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, police said.

When police arrived at Timberline Ranch, a rural property on 144th Avenue in Maple Ridge, five men were arrested as suspects in the alleged break-in.

Supt. Dave Walsh, head of Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment, advised people to call police rather than confront thieves and try to deal with the situation.

“It should go without saying that this type of thing should be left to police," he said in a statement Tuesday.

"It is always dangerous when a firearm is involved in any crime, and this includes any citizen. Anytime a firearm is discharged, it poses a serious threat to the public, and police officers’ safety. ”

Craig Douglas, executive director of Timberline Ranch, said the ranch is a kids camp with 45 horses that is visited by about 6,000 children a year.

He said he didn't know whether the employee will be charged.

"My guess is he won't," he said. "It's pretty ridiculous that people would break into a kids camp."

Police said two ranch employees caught the suspected thieves in the act of stealing tools at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The suspects, ranging in age from 20 to 45, all live outside Maple Ridge, police said.

While I wouldn't condone frontier justice, the crown would be absolutely stupid to press charges against someone who is only defending his properties.

Honestly, Mr. RCMP, you guys have better things to do than to catch the good guys.

Left to them so they can sit there and do nothing?
There is no better way than taking things into your own hands.
Legal system is a joke.
