Non-profit group: give every woman in BC free birth control
A new proposal has hit Premier Christy Clark's desk

3    VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - If one non-profit group has its way, all women in BC will have free access to prescription contraceptives. "Options for Sexual Health" says it will save close to a hundred million dollars.

Sibohan Aspinal represents the group that is the largest provider of sexual health services in Canada, and says it would include all types of birth control.

"In terms of where the savings come from, we're looking at savings from health care costs and social services costs that would result from unplanned pregnancies," explains Aspinal.

They're not targetting any group specifically, saying birth control should be available to any woman who wants it.

"But I think of course one concern we could all agree on is teen pregnancies," says Aspinal. "That has much longer ranging negative social impacts."

And what about women who don't want anything to do with the idea?

"Continue to push for education," suggests Aspinal. "Certainly to let women know, you know, once hopefully this opportunity comes to pass, that it is something available for them."

The group didn't receive any reaction from BC politicians yet, but Aspinal says so far, they've had no opposition from Pro Life groups.
