0 VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Vancouver International Children's Festival is in danger of shutting down forever. Organizers of the 35-year tradition blame slow ticket sales and harsh government cuts to the arts.
The festival's board chair Tom Stulberg says because of that, they've cut costs and rejigged some of the acts to save money.
"We've faced increased competition significantly for sponsorship dollars, and we've seen the rules change for arts funding and gaming grant funding."
They even moved the event from Vanier Park to Granville Island, but that ended up hurting ticket sales.
"Without ticket sales, we truly are doomed," says Stulberg.
He adds they've avoided passing on increasing costs to buyers, but so far, only 50 per cent of tickets have been sold.
"We have enough money to produce the show this year and do a great job," says Stulberg. "But unless we sell more than the 60 per cent of seats we've budgeted, we won't have enough money to meet the demands to moving into the fall and spring of next year."
He's urging people from around the Lower Mainland to bail the festival out. The event begins May 30th and runs until June 5th. Tickets are $18 + HST. |
