Chinese army's first video game takes aim at America

The PLA's debut shoot-'em-up game casts U.S soldiers as the enemy, but it's actually a pretty good game besides

War games have become increasingly high-tech over the years, but the Chinese military has always lagged a bit behind -- at least, until now.

State media reports that China's Nanjing Military Region has recently finished their video game titled "Glorious Mission" (also translated as "Mission of Honor").

“Although foreign military games have been used in some Chinese armies' daily training,” writes Wang Hanlu of People’s Daily, “they may not suit Chinese soldiers and even mislead them due to the different concepts of values and military thoughts.”

The completely Chinese-made "Glorious Mission" brings China up to speed on military game development.

“The game, with a soldier’s personal story in the military camp as the background and participating in a large-scale actual-troop confrontation drill code-named ‘Glorious Mission’ is the main storyline," explains the PLA Daily.

"It is divided into three parts including basic training, individual soldier’s tasks and squad/team confrontation. In the squad/team confrontation part, 32 soldiers can log on at the same time to start combat according to the rules in selected scenes.”

Although the game has received limited coverage in China, it has generated waves in the United States, reports BehindTheWall, not for its graphics or the fact that it brings the Chinese army up to speed, but for the fact that American soldiers are the main adversary.

“[Many people's] concern is that the game, which was ostensibly developed as a training tool for the PLA, makes American soldiers and equipment the enemy combatant and could lead young, impressionable trainees to believe that the United States is the enemy,” writes Ed Flanagan.

Although political commentators now have new fodder for the news cycle, the tech world is also chattering about the game, but what is exciting comment is the smoothness of the game’s graphics and game play.

“The game itself looks pretty well made,” one blogger posted. “Graphics definitely on par with at least the [Call of Duty] series.”

Created by a Chinese tech firm, Giant Interactive Group, Inc., Glorious Mission shows just how far the Chinese gaming industry has progressed. Once reliant on international firms for high-quality graphics and design, this military exercise also shows how domestic firms are now also flexing their muscles.

The improvement reflects the sheer size of what is at stake -- in 2010, China's online gaming market, with 76 million online game players, raked in RMB 32.37 billion, a 26.3 percent increase over 2009.

Yet another area where Chinese indigenous technology has reached world class standards.

As for this Chinese video game technology, if they are able to commercialize this technology properly, they can make a lot of money.
