Terry Fox's mom Betty is seriously ill, but not with cancer

METRO VANCOUVER - Terry Fox's mother Betty Fox is seriously ill, but reports that she has cancer are incorrect, a statement on the Terry Fox Foundation website said Friday morning.

The foundation will not be releasing any further details, according to the statement.

"We have always appreciated the support and understanding the media has granted to our family since Terry's Marathon of Hope in 1980," the statement says. "We are hopeful that Betty's privacy and ours will be respected at this time. We thank you in advance for your consideration."

Fox ran across Canada in the Marathon of Hope in 1980 to raise money for cancer after he had his right leg amputated at the age of 18. Fox was forced to stop running when his cancer came back in his lungs. He passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.

To date, over $550 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

Fox's mother Betty Fox was last in the public eye during the 2010 Winter Games when she carried the Olympic Flag during the opening ceremonies in Vancouver.
