International anti-euthanasia meeting wraps up in Richmond

2 RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - Many people are mourning the death of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the man who helped more than one hundred patients end their own lives. But those on the flip side of the debate are working harder than ever to keep assisted suicide illegal.
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition is wrapping up its third annual international symposium, which was held in Richmond.
The coalition's Alex Schadenberg says assisted suicide might be gaining more support because of the way proponents are advancing the agenda.
"The euthanasia lobby likes to use the term 'aid in dying.' That's a confusing term because many people wouldn't associate 'aid in dying' with assisted suicide or euthanasia," he remarks.
He says the laws in Canada are there for a good reason, and more attention should be paid to the type of care people get while they are dying, rather than legislation to enable others to hasten their deaths.
"The law is meant to prevent others from being involved in the act. It reflects the vulnerable nature of many people who might be considering killing themselves by whatever means." |
