It is interesting that Taiwan also claims these islands. If Taiwan sends warships to the Spratly Islands and the Vietnamese attack, will the US defend Taiwan based on their defence agreement?
Remember, the US is now siding with Vietnam against the Chinese.
Similarly, with regard to Diaoyu islands, will the US defend Taiwan against the Japadogs based on their defence agreement?
If Vietnam attacks Taiwan warships in Spratly Islands, the answer is yes.
If Japan ...

Would you please elaborate on your point?
The US has defensive agreements with both the Japadogs and Taiwan.
Both Japan and Taiwan are claiming the Diaoyu Islands.
Which side should the US side with?
Background ~ 1970-1973:
1) midst of cold war;
2) during US-Vietnam war;
3) Taiwan losing the representative status in UN;
4) Oil crisis
KMB/President Chiang has assigned the ruling authorization (not possession, very much like colonization except you are not sending your people to live there) of Diaoyu Islands to the US (under US direction) in exchange for the US to send their fleet policing Taiwan Strait to protect Taiwan from China PRC invasion. At the same time, based on Okinawa Reversion Treaty, US assigned the ruling authorization of Diaoyu Islands to Japan.
Outcome:
In international treaty, there's a common proviso stating that if one country in control of a place for over 50 years, under the consent of the local resident, that place will ultimately belong to the country in control. Thus, on the no man land of Diaoyu Islands, the longer the time, the more law enforcement Japan can seek from the international society. Japan has been relentlessly creating pre-existing facts in the period by sending fleets governing the seashore, technicans to setup lighthouse, and some troops to live on some of the islands. In comparison, it's so disappointed what have both PRC and Taiwan done these years.
Deadline: ~ 2018-2020
Right now you should know why China PLA has to setup their aircraft carrier fleet in this couple years in a hurry. There is no time to waste. Hopefully they can become a solid combating force in the area by 2015. Without them you are only battling US/Japan with saliva.
For the aircraft carrier, the Chinese had to wait for its weapons systems, warships and suitable planes to get ready for the past couple of years.
China did send fishing fleets and fisheries partrol boats to the Diaoyu Islands area.
It should be the ROC that should send its ships there now, since the Diaoyu Islands are historically under Taiwan province's jurisdiction. Also, this will force the US defend Diaoyu Islands against the Japadogs under the Taiwan defensive agreement.
If I were you, I won't expect too much on the current Taiwan government. For them, it's already a joke to keep peace within the province. To deal with the Diaoyu Islands issue, it can only be the PRC/US game. Japadog is only the chess. They hope they can be a dominant factor...
