Facebook group identifying rioters nears 100,000 'likes'
Site creator says posts have to be carefully monitored

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's the power of social media -- A Facebook group set up for people to post photos of rioters already has almost 100,000 'likes.'
Vancouver's Robbie Gorcak helped set up two of the most popular sites people are using to help identify those behind Wednesday's destruction.
"You can send in your photos to the police, but that doesn't necessarily identify them," he says. "They need a place [to be posted so people can be identified]."
He and some others are trying to moderate photos and comments and are forwarding some things along to police, but some issues are coming up.
"Somebody had actually posted with their phone number and sort of said, 'go to town on that person and their family,' and I do express my apologies to their family, I didn't wish that upon them at all. And they had received some very nasty messages and so on. But that has since be taken down."
But he says the sites have a purpose and will be up for a while. "I do feel bad for the people that are getting shamed. The city is not going to recover for a long time from this. We've been asked but I don't think we can just take it down."
Gorcak says the site is serving its purpose.
"Some of these people have come forward because they've been seen in this light on Facebook and it does show that they're taking responsibility for their actions, which is a positive thing that can be taken out of this."
He says he isn't worried about any legal problems from either site.
BC Civil Liberties Association Executive Director David Eby says citizens have a role to play in identifying people who break the law, but warns it's the role of the courts to decide if someone is guilty or not. |
