Look out for a common type of pre-cancerous skin lesion

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - As we ease into sunny, summer weather, doctors want you to watch out for signs of a different kind of skin problem. The problem they're concerned about is called Actinic Keratosis, or AK, a very common type of pre-cancerous skin lesion.
"Usually it will look like an area that might red or scaly and it might be no bigger than the size of your fingernail. Sometimes as people are applying sunscreen to their skin, they're going to feel a little area of roughness," explains UBC Dermatology head Dr. Harvey Lui.
The condition is treatable. You can freeze the area with liquid nitrogen spray or use a special cream. "That will search out abnormal cells. This cream will cause those cells to die. Those skin cells will peel off and then new skin comes in to replace it."
Lui adds the best thing to prevent AK is by wearing protective clothing, staying out of the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and seeking shade or wearing a strong sunscreen. |
