0 WHISTLER (NEWS1130) - A man has died, and a woman is feared drowned after the two ended up in Whistler's Cheakamus River Saturday afternoon.
The two were on a guided fly-fishing trip when one of them fell in around 3:45 p.m. The other person then jumped into the water in a rescue attempt, but both were swept up in the swift current and carried down river.
The fishing guide ran along the shore, but eventually lost sight of the pair and called RCMP.
A search and rescue helicopter spotted the man face down in the water just after 5 pm.
The search for the woman will resume Sunday morning after being called off Saturday night.
Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair with Whistler RCMP admits it's unlikely the woman will be found alive.
"The river is quite hazardous, very nasty terrain in there. And the river itself is quite dangerous," he says. "Realistically, given the hazards that exist in the river that [finding her alive] is not a strong possibility."
Both the man and the woman are from BC, but no other details have been released |
