METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's been a busy year and an even busier week for conservation officers tasked with keeping bears out of neighbourhoods.
Three cubs were orphaned when a mother bear was killed near Buntzen Lake on Monday.
On Thursday, officers spent much of the afternoon chasing a bear through the Walnut Grove area of Langley.
Tony Webb with the North Shore Bear Network says it's not even peak season for bear sightings yet.
"Our busy time comes at the end of August and into September," Webb said. "That's when they go looking foods to build up into hibernation for winter."
Many berries haven't ripened yet because summer arrived so late this year.
Without food in their natural habitats, bears are forced to wander into areas where people live to find something to eat.
Webb says people have to take responsibility for storing their garbage properly.
"Garbage is the main source of the problem," Webb said. "We're slowly getting there but we need a lot more effort on the part of the public. We're trying to advocate the use of bear resistant containers. The bear will come and bang it around a couple of times and then move off."
He says keeping garbage in a garage or a shed isn't a good idea because the bears will just force their way in. |
