Are today's passenger jets too complicated?
Many accidents from "loss-of-control" incidents

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There are concerns that modern passenger jets are becoming too complicated and some pilots are overwhelmed by all the computers, lights, and dials in the cockpit.

Reporter Chris Sorensen is looking at the issue in the latest edition of Macleans magazine. He says the systems designed to help pilots keep the plane in the air might be causing confusion:

"What the problem seems to be is that there are a significant number of accidents that result from aerodynamic stalls, what the industry calls loss-of-control," he explains.

He adds pilots need more training on how to recover from stalls. In the last five years, there have been 50 accidents related to loss-of-control incidents, including the crash of an Air France jet off the coast of Brazil two years ago.

"For some reason, those types of crashes, unlike other types of airline accidents, have not really gone down over the years," says Sorensen. "And there may be some evidence to suggest that maybe they might actually be on the increase."
