RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - People who haven't been vaccinated against measles and who were at Vancouver International Airport 10 days ago may have contracted measles.
A man travelling from Korea to Edmonton transferred airplanes in Vancouver on August 15, and may have infected people along the way.
Babies under a year old are at the highest risk, says Dr. Monika Naus with the BC Centre for Disease Control.
"People will have received the measles vaccine on or around their first birthday. So I think the people we would be most concerned about are people who are conscientious or objective to vaccinations. The person who actually developed measles while travelling and was sick on the airplane coming back was not immunized, and refused to be immunized for conscientious reasons," she explains.
Measles is airborne and symptoms include a cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash. But you could end up in the hospital.
"When we had our outbreak last year in British Columbia one person was actually sick enough to end up in intensive care."
The man was travelling on Korean Airlines flight # KE071 departed Seoul, South Korea on 15 Aug., 2011 at approximately 1900-1930 hrs, arrived in Vancouver at approx 1330-1430 on 15 Aug., 2011.
He got on Air Canada flight # AC244 departed Vancouver on 15 Aug., 2011 at approximately 1630 hrs |
