NAG'S HEAD, NC. (NEWS1130) - Hurricane Irene has lost a bit of its punch as it takes aim at the US east coast.  It was downgraded to Category One status when winds dropped to 150 kilometres an hour earlier today.

Reporter Matt Gutman is in Nag's Head, North Carolina.  He drove around this morning trying to find any signs of damage, but came up shorthanded.  He also didn't see anybody out and about.

Most businesses there are boarded up and there were no drivers on the road.

Meantime, reporter Jim Sciutto is in Ocean City, Maryland, where the normally busy streets of the beach resort are deserted.  The storm is supposed to hover over the area for at least 12 hours throughout Saturday night.

The majority of people who live there have taken a precaution and have left town.

Irene has caused the first hurricane warning in New York in 26 years.  Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered people in several low lying areas to evacuate.
