VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The long weekend scramble home and then back to the grind of the regular commute to work and school. Early September is a busy time on the roads and a bad time to try to cheat the rules on distracted driving.
Don't try to sneak a call, email or text on your phone while you're driving. Police are well into their September ticketing blitz, targeting distracted drivers.
Superintendent Norm Gaumont with RCMP Traffic Services says too many people are still doing it. "Oh yeah! I can't go to work or go home from work everyday, I'm pulling people over that are still talking on their cell phones or texting."
So that means if you're staring at your lap while driving, don't be surprised if you're nailed with a $167 ticket. "We're hoping that people start putting those things away. It's incredibly dangerous. It's the number one cause of fatal [accidents] right now, it's distracted driving."
Police want to double the number of tickets they typically hand out in September, from 1,000 to 2,000. |
