Scrape your dirty dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
You can save up to 10 gallons of water by scraping the food off your dirty dishes instead of rinsing them. Scraping left over food into the trash (or adding it to your compost pile) also uses a lot less water than putting it in the garbage disposal.

If every household in the United States scraped their dishes (and saved 10 gallons of water) tonight, it would save more than 1 billion gallons of water - in just one day!
