Premier Christy Clark to unveil long-promised B.C. jobs plan
VICTORIA - Premier Christy Clark will take the wraps off her long-promised jobs agenda this week, making public a plan she's been developing for months and that she's said her government will use to both defend and create jobs throughout the province.
Clark will start her week with stops today in Prince Rupert and Kitamaat Village, where she is expected to visit the Port of Prince Rupert and tour the site of a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal - a project that, if it proceeds, will create more than 1,500 person years of employment during construction alone.
The government has said it sees great potential in the province's northwest, and a focus there could mean investments in things such as power generation to help enable growth in sectors such as liquefied natural gas and mining.
The announcements will continue throughout the week, including one Tuesday at Thompson Rivers University - where she intends to showcase the importance of international education - as well as a speech Wednesday to the Surrey Board of Trade.
Clark is expected to put the entire agenda into focus at a marquee speech Thursday at the Vancouver Board of Trade, where she will unveil a physical document that outlines the plan and its targets.
She will cap off her week at an Asia Pacific forum in Vancouver on Friday.
New Democratic Party finance critic Bruce Ralston said Friday he is hopeful training and education are a key focus of the plan.
"What we'll be looking for is something beyond just executing [former premier] Gordon Campbell's plan," said Ralston. |
