RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - Seven people have contracted food poisoning at a Subway sandwich outlet in the international terminal of Vancouver Airport.
Vancouver Coastal Health inspectors took action as soon as food poisoning was suspected. "The inspectors were there immediately. It was a tuna fish sandwich that was in question. That was immediately taken off the menu," says Justin Karasick of Coastal Health.
The health authority's Dr. Patricia Daly says their symptoms are typical of the kind of food poisoning that comes from undercooked fish, like tuna.
"They're not like typical food poisoning with vomiting and diarrhea, they're more... like an allergic reaction, with flushing and other types of things," she says. "Mild - a mild allergic reaction, those were the symptoms."
Only one of the sick people was identified as a traveller, the others were airport employees. All were taken to hospital to get checked over and as of Friday night, only one remained there.
Daly says just because food poisoning can be traced to a particular restaurant doesn't mean the restaurant will be closed down.
"A restaurant would not necessarily be closed," she says. "It would depend on the inspection that occurs at the time, we would ensure that if they have been storing the food inappropriately that they are aware of correct handling practices."
Canadians concerned about food safety
Surveys and focus groups for the federal government have found that nearly two-thirds of Canadians wish they had more information about food safety.
Nearly one-third of respondents said they believe the risk of consuming contaminated foods has risen in the last two years.
The 109-page report found 89 per cent of the people surveyed are moderately confident in the food system.
