THE victim of a hit-and-run has been left stunned after four drivers ignored him while he lay bleeding on a Lavington street.
In Albury’s third hit-and-run in less than two months, John McKillop, 39, was struck at 6.30pm on Saturday as he attempted to cross Kemp Street near Kaitlers Road.
Speaking from his Albury hospital bed yesterday, the father of three said he had vivid memories of being hit and knocked to the ground by the dark-coloured sedan.
Mr McKillop is staggered that passers-by ignored him as he lay injured.
“I was lying in the middle of the road and four cars drove around me,” he said.
“They just slowed down, swerved around me and kept going.”
Eventually a passing doctor stopped and treated Mr McKillop before ambulance crews arrived.
Mr McKillop suffered a suspected broken hip, several fractured ribs and a possible compression fracture in his neck.
“At first I didn’t see anything coming then all of a sudden, bang it was there,” he said.
“I jumped, otherwise I reckon my legs would be broken, I went over the bonnet, over the roof, onto the ground and the car stopped for about five
seconds and then took off.
“I’m just so sore all over.
“It’s like a truck’s hit me.
“I just want to tell them to do the right thing, if I had a bad head injury I could have died.
“For all they know I could be dead.
“What’s the world coming to for someone to just leave you in the middle of the road?”
Police said while Mr McKillop didn’t look both ways before the accident, it was an offence for the driver not to stop.
Mr McKillop is appealing for the driver to come forward.
Due to his injuries, he was unable to record the registration number of the car and did not see the driver.
“They saw me, of course, it was right outside my house and under a street light so there’s no way they could not have,” Mr McKillop said.
“They just left me there, I couldn’t believe it, they didn’t even wind down the window or anything.”
Mr McKillop was due to start a new job with Abigroup next week.
Insp Lynelle Rodwell, of Albury police, said the responsibility to stop rested with the driver and infringement notices could be issued.
“Speculation can be made that perhaps the drivers did not stop for fear of other offences being detected such as being unlicensed, drink-driving, or not wearing a seatbelt,” she said.
“A reasonable and socially responsible person would make every effort to stop and render assistance, even if it was for their own peace of mind.
“Surely the driver would be forever wondering what had happened to the pedestrian that was struck?” |
