[溫哥華本地新聞] Gas prices expected to drop

Gas prices expected to dropAnalyst says taxation in Vancouver is a contributing factor to high gas pricesShelby Thom

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Gas prices usually drop after the summer, so why are Vancouverites still emptying their pockets at the pumps?

Petroleum industry analyst Jason Parent with the Kent group says prices are extremely high for this season.

"Normally gas prices fall off this time of year. That has to do with refiners margins decreasing, we come off the summer driving season and demand for fine product is down usually. Thus we have lower refining margins and lower wholesale prices which reflect retail prices."

Parent says crude oil prices have been fluctuating over the last month on a daily basis. He says prices depend on which direction they go.

The analyst says it's not likely we are going to see refining margins holding steady or increasing, so it is likely to see prices coming down.

Parent says taxation in Vancouver is a contributing factor to high gas prices.

"It plays a huge factor in why Vancouver's gas prices are higher than most other places in the country."

Metro Vancouver mayors have voted in favour of a two cents per litre gas tax hike to fund regional transit projects and service improvements. This will set the stage for a price jump at the pumps next spring.

How much do you save each time? Even if you reside in Richmond, back and forth costs you about $4.0 + travel time. So I guess about $10 savings on a compact car...

How much do you save each time?

I ran some calculations a while back, and it turned out that taking the credit card 2.5% premium, gas price difference, and the amount of gas I used going down and coming home into account, I can only save $3 - $4 if I go with a nearly completely empty tank (with the low gas warning light coming on and 5 - 7 L's worth of gas remaining in the tank). This does not take into account the amount of time I need to drive down and back, nor does it take into account the miniscule amount of wear and tear on the car from the drive. Additionally, I only go late in the evening when there is at most a 5 or 6 car wait. If the line up is long, I waste more gas idling.

Unless the requirements are all met by coincidence (I'm in south Richmond / Delta, tank is nearly empty, it's late in the evening, etc.), I don't bother going down to PR specifically to fill up.

Not only the savings is minimal, you are wasting gas and releasing more pollution for no cause. It's funny that at the end of the day the only things all the righteous people with high morals see is money and wear on their cars.

I wish they could make gas $20 per L. The true cost of gas is way more than that dollar you pay.

I worked in south Richmond, just off the tunnel. For me, 20km one way. 40km round trip to Point Roberts. That's about $5 gas.
I fill up 55L, $1.22 premium gas in PR vs $1.50 here. Approx. save $10 per tank. A month save about $20-$30 for one car. Two cars save about $50-$60 per month. A year = $600-$700, almost enough for a HK flight ticket.
I have NEXUS so wait time is minimal. I can come back within an hour.
Making more pollution? Yes. But with a new born, saving comes first.

But of course if I live in Burnaby, I won't bother doing that.

There is your problem right there -- your conditions are quite similar to mine, and I'd say you aren't really saving nearly as much money as you think, esp when you need to sink an hour for each fill up.

So you save $10 per tank, but the round trip already eliminates $5 out of that. Add the 2.5% currency exchange premium, the wear and tear on the car, and most importantly, the extra hour you need for the trip. How much is that extra hour each week worth to you? In the absolute lowest denominator case, minimum wage is $10/hr. To me at least, that $5 you save is not worth it, esp when you have a newborn.

Of course, the choice is always yours.

No I mean $10 net saving after the gas to PR. Btw, I have US visa card, so no exchange rate premium.

you can easily make more than $10 by working just a few minutes a day.
