New rules in US could lead to Cdn Passengers Bill of RightsA look at some of the fees and taxes airline passengers in Canada already pay
RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - You better start counting up your nickels and dimes. After the dollar briefly hit parity this morning, Canadian travellers to the US were not overly pleased with a new fee. Passengers heading south by air or sea will now have to pay an inspection fee of $5.50.
News of the new levy is going over like a lead balloon with most people at the airport, except for one woman who doesn't mind the tax given the fact that the economy is struggling. "Look at the condition the US is in at the moment after the war, I think it's just $5."
"Everything costs nowadays, right? So, one more fee is one more fee, I guess. If it helps us get through lines quicker and the flights faster, the cost of everything is going up, so more fees to come," says Amanda.
The fee is being added to higher airline baggage fees, meal fees and some flights are even making you pay for pillows and blankets.
Under NAFTA, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico had been exempt from the fee since 1997 but that changed with the US-Colombian free trade agreement last Friday.
Roughly 7 million Canadians fly to the US every year, with thousands arriving by boat. The new fee is expected to go into effect in two weeks.
