VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Occupy Vancouver protesters say they've been helping the homeless with essential services that the government should be responsible for.  As a result, the camp at the Art Gallery has become a haven for the city's neediest people.

"What we're seeing is a lot of homeless residents from Vancouver and the Downtown Eastside, coming through, so we end up dealing with mental health issues.  There are people coming through who have addiction issues," says Mathew Kagis, who is on the First Aid Committee at Occupy Vancouver.

"You gather people and it's a welcoming space, and as I say there's food and medical care, and people who won't judge them.  Of course they're going to show up."

Kagis is concerned for the homeless showing up at the camp because the help he gives them is not nearly enough.

"Sure, I can patch the wound, but the reason the wound won't heal is because they live outside, they don't have access to proper hygiene, and they don't have regular healthy food."

Kagis says the camp has managed to avoid major problems with pests so far, but is warning campers to be hyper-vigilant about the risk of bed bugs.

And there is little, if anything he can do to help the homeless with mental health or addiction.  Kagis says he treated four or five homeless people during a recent overnight shift.  There were about 100 campers at the site that night.
