China’s President Xi Jinping came out as the dominant leader at the opening of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Monday in Bali, Indonesia.

The Chinese president took leadership role at the gathering after the government shutdown at home kept US President Barack Obama from attending the APEC summit. Secretary of State John Kerry replaced Obama at the meeting.

According to a report in the New York Times, the absence of the US president was strongly felt at the meeting attended by China, Russia, Japan, the US and 17 other Asia-Pacific economies. China grabbed the opportunity to strengthen its economic and regional powers at the annual APEC summit, which is aimed at promoting trade and investment liberalization between the member countries.

Mr. Xi was a keynote speaker at the meeting. He delivered a lengthy, carefully written speech that did not make any reference to the US president and focused on the thesis of economic renovation in China. Xi also stressed on the need for Beijing to have the Asia-Pacific Rim region as a partner.

“China cannot develop in isolation of the Asia-Pacific, and the Asia-Pacific cannot prosper without China,” Mr. Xi said.

Even though Mr. Kerry reiterated Mr. Obama’s commitment to stay engaged with the Asia-Pacific economies, the US president’s nonappearance at the summit left the ground free for the leader of China to broadcast the rising might of the world’s second-largest economy.

“China will firmly uphold regional peace and stability and help cement a foundation for a win-win situation in the Asia-Pacific,” President Xi Jinping told an APEC business forum, according to a report in the Inquirer. “We the Chinese often say a family in harmony prospers. As a member of the Asia-Pacific family, China is ready to live in amity with other family members and help each other.”

According to a report in The Hindu, US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker told reporters that US delegation members at the summit were making “great progress.” He also said they had hit a deal on a number of previously sticking points.

SO??  I think it is more important that China can be a friendly nation with others, rather than learn it from some other nations trying to dominate and bully others.

China does not bully other countries or bomb other countries for no reason.
