Love his website! He actually called himself coffee Nazi. I though it's a nickname that others call behind his back.
I've only got coffee from him once. So I have no comment on the quality.
Well, mentioning Starbxxxx (esp comparing with their beans) at any independent coffee house is just asking for trouble. LOL
I like the following so far:
Milano (W 8th location)
Elysian (both)
JJ (commercial dr makes better espresso)
Kafka’s
Matchstick was too acidic for me but I heard they may have improved since.
I like Revolver for my single visit so far but they don't roast their coffee beans.
We in some way are spoiled here. I went to Montreal and found that having in-house roasted coffee isn't a common thing there. (guessing it's east coast vs west coast) We saw a few "well rated" cafe using 49th Parallel beans.... @_@
We buy beans when we travel as "hand gift" for ourselves.
If you get good beans, you use less. It may cost more, but ended up saving some money.
For Starbucks, the only thing I use is their Reserve bean. Even so, their single origin beans are getting very rare. They are actually decent if you are looking for a bold (typical SB) yet flavorful coffee. I am drinking the Maui Mukka, Sundried Sumatra and Ethopia Sadamo. The Maui Mukka is very very good. I use my siphon to make these.
For my daily stuff, I am still drinking some homegrown coffee beans from a friend in Malaysia/Indonesia. They don't have a brand yet (sell mostly local), and the flavor is light, and earthy for daily use. I also have a bag of Ipoh White Coffee bean, it's good with condense milk.
Finally.. for a good/cheap cup of coffee Trader Joe's Joe brand is a very decent. It very much taste like Tim Horton's with a mallow flavor.
Since I longer have a coffee maker, I use manual drip. My Bodum burr grinder works great with everything except expresso.
PK: do you have green beans from your friend, and roast them yourself? As a beginner, I actual love the good forth milk more. Espresso shot is secondary.
