Four killed in truck crash in Bath

London (AFP) - Four people including a young girl were killed when a 32-tonne tipper truck lost control on a steep hill in Bath, Somerset, on Monday, police said.

Three adults who were in a car died, a girl pedestrian was killed and four other injured people were taken to a hospital, one with serious injuries.

Photographs showed the truck on its side with the gravel it was carrying spilled out onto the road. The driver was injured in the accident.

"We are continuing to carry out a detailed examination of the scene in Bath, where four people tragically died this afternoon," a spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said.

One pedestrian was airlifted to hospital and was in a "critical" condition according to an ambulance spokeswoman.

Liberal Democrat MP Don Foster said the accident had struck the close-knit suburb of Bath hard.

"The community is in shock, both for the families of those killed and also those who have been affected," Foster said.

"We are still waiting to get more details as to what the cause was. It is obviously devastating, tragic and awful, but until we know more we cannot speculate."
