What is STV?

•Constituencies are larger and have more than one member each. B.C. would have 20 constituencies, but the legislature would remain at 85 seats.
•Under STV, Richmond voters would vote together with Delta voters to choose their five MLAs.
•On election day, voters rank their candidates in order of preference (1, 2, 3 instead of “X”), and are able to mark as many or few preferences on their ballots.
•The total number of voters is counted, which is then divided by the number of seats in the constituency, plus one. That amount is the number of votes a candidate needs to win a seat.
•In Richmond, what’s needed to win a seat is approximately one-fifth of the total vote. If not enough candidates garner enough votes, surplus votes of candidates elected or dropped off the ballot are redistributed.
