【明報專訊】四川省昨日首次公布在地震中遇難和失蹤的學生人數，共5335人，較民間人士蒐集到的數字少了約300人。當局還稱，尚未發現主要因建築質量原因而導致房屋倒塌的案例，若有確實證據能證明違法施工，將「嚴格查處」。

四川省民政廳廳長黃明全稱，迄今為止，地震遇難總人數為68,712人，失蹤人數為17,921人，這兩個數字都未有變化。

未講為何一年後始公布

四川省政府昨於成都召開新聞發布會，省教育廳廳長涂文濤表示，經過學校教育部門反覆核實，在「五一二」大地震中遇難或失蹤的學生共有5335名。

他並沒有解釋為何要事隔一年才公布，但稱失蹤人士最後還要經法律程序認證，目前總數與家長申請國家撫恤金及政府救助金的情一致，能夠反映真實情。

他指，另有546名學生申請殘疾證明，登記工作還在進行中；他並感謝外界對四川教育界的關心，並對死難學生的家長表示慰問。

「遇難人數難核實」

四川省新聞辦公室稱，各級政府最終將會公布遇難失蹤人士名單，並核定最終遇難人數，但由於部分遺體未有留下身分資料，也有遺體被發現時已經無法辨認身分，以及有遇難失蹤人士的利害關係人，由於各種原因沒有或不願申報名單等原因，核實公布工作十分困難。

至於外界關心的另一議題「豆腐渣工程」，四川省建設廳廳長楊洪波表示，震後已派出2500名專家及技術人員到各災區，對包括學校校舍在內的各種建築損眦情 進行鑑定，尚未發現主要因建築質量原因而導致房屋倒塌的案例，「只要有確切證據證明在建築設計和建築施工過程中確實存在違法違紀的問題，有關部門將依法嚴肅查處建築公司，絕不姑息」。

根據專家組的報告，房屋損眦嚴重的主要原因是地震能量巨大、烈度超強、震源淺、持續時間長、波及範圍廣。調查又發現，大開間、大開窗、外走廊等形式的房屋結構較易倒塌，而多數建於上世紀90年代中期之前的房屋，所使用的預製空心板等建築材料無法抵禦強震，楊洪波說，「重災區房屋建築抗震設防很難抵禦此次特大地震的破壞，重災區房屋的倒塌是不可抗的。」

I've been too busy to post this (and a few other related news articles) myself, so thank you for bringing this up.

Also, I want to emphasize the government's official insistence to deny that the 豆腐渣工程 has resulted in the collapse of the buildings (and schools in particular). Their official "story" insisted that the magnitude of the earthquake caused the buildings to collapse, so the deaths were the result of an act of nature. Had the deaths been the result of the 豆腐渣工程, somebody would have to bear the responsibility.

i hate to say this, but within those tofu junk schools, many were built with donations such as "hope project". Where did the money go? why were the schools sub-standard? If the gov admits those were tofu junk schools, it's much more than just handing over someone responsible for allowing sub-standard buildings. They would have also explain where the donation (to build sturdy schools) went. I've heard too many stories of the corruption of Chinese officials, so I never donate to projects in China.

Yes, of course. And that is precisely why the Central Government is trying hard to keep a lid on this. To dig deeper would only reveal the extensive level of corruption that is going on at the local (or higher) government levels, and of course we know that in the eyes of the Central Government, this government embarrassment would disrupt "harmony".

與其執著o係之前既野係唔係豆腐渣, 不如花時間既監察一下而家重建緊既野係唔係合規格好過啦.
擺到明之前實有豆腐渣啦... 係人都知啦... 咁又點woh, 唔通拉哂班官員抄家滅族咩?

the problem is the same officials are in charge of reconstruction. what makes u think tofu junk schools won't happen again?? this is not about 冤冤相報何時了. the kids who died did nothing to hurt the officials.

Clearly, some officials are responsible for those tofu schools. When those schools were built, someone had to be responsible for approving those building permits. Now the provincial government is just covering up who was responsible for approving those schools.
