Helmer's Organic Farm

With some of Vancouver's top chefs in their corner, Doug and Jeanette Helmer have created a lucrative business from the lowly potato. Leaving behind city life and Doug's job as a chartered accountant, the Helmers moved to Pemberton in 1994 to live on their small-scale farm; they began farming organically in 1982 and have been certified organic for more than a decade. The farm grows almost 20 varieties of potatos on eight acres, with crops rotated every five years.
The Helmers have also developed a strong relationship with top chefs like Rob Feenie, who shot an episode of his show at the farm, and Andrew Springett of The Pointe at the Wickaninnish Inn, who cooked up a fund-raising dinner for the local junior Dragonboat team; indeed, many chefs will often tell the Helmers what varieties of potato would be lucrative to plant. In addition to being plated in many of Vancouver's top restaurants, the Helmers' produce can be found, mid-July to October, at Granville Island's Public Market, the East Van Farmers' Market and at select Capers locations.
